The West Exit area is home to a major business district, with high-rise office buildings and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government buildings. Closer to the station is the area where electronics retailers are clustered.
The upper floors of the skyscrapers in this district house restaurants offering a fine aerial view of Tokyo more than 100 meters above ground. At the West Exit of Shinjuku Station, electronics retailers small and large vigorously compete for customers looking for bargains on appliances and personal computers. Two department stores, Odakyu Department Store and Keio Department Store, as well as other retailers, are also located here.

These areas of Shinjuku have a very different atmosphere in the daytime and at night.
In the East Exit area, there are movie theaters, bowling alleys and other amusements. This is also the home of Shinjuku Suehirotei, where people go to enjoy traditional Japanese forms of humor such as rakugo comic storytelling and manzai stand-up comedy. There are plenty of night spots too, beginning with Kabukicho, one of the world's major nightlife areas, Omoide-yokocho, filled with friendly izakaya pubs, and Golden-gai Street, a lane lined with bars that has its own special mood.
Shinjuku 3-chome is a popular shopping destination, with major department stores and plenty of shops catering to young people.

This area is also known for its beautiful lighting displays on winter evenings.
